Insurance Solutions Built by Brokers, for Brokers

BenefitsGuide started with a simple idea: insurance brokers deserve tools as good as the ones the biggest companies in the world use. Nearly 20 years later, over 100 agencies run their business on what we built.

It Started with a Magazine Article

Back in December of 2004, I read an article in Fortune magazine about Marc Benioff, Salesforce.com, and the democratization of CRM. It quite literally changed the course and direction of my entire life.

Salesforce was building an ecosystem of partner companies, each creating different solutions on their platform. The idea was simple and brilliant: as each new application gets published, the value of the entire platform increases. Thousands of pre-built solutions for every business need you can imagine — all available on demand.

Software as a Service. I was sold.

There was just one problem. Back then, there were no applications on Salesforce designed specifically for the group health insurance broker. Nothing for managing renewals, tracking commissions, or keeping client data in one place. If we wanted it, we'd have to build it ourselves.

So that's exactly what we did.

We Built It Because We Needed It

We signed a multi-year contract with Salesforce and hired one of their top consulting partners to customize the platform for our own group insurance brokerage.

The impact was immediate. I went from being one of the cogs in the wheel of client service operations to finally being able to focus my efforts entirely on selling new business.

From that point on, every six or nine months we'd invest in building out more functionality. We kept a feature request list. Every time someone in our office said "wouldn't it be great if…" — that went on the list.

"These aren't generic templates. They're built by insurance brokers, for insurance brokers. Every feature on this platform exists because someone in our office said 'wouldn't it be great if…' and we went and built it."

— Jason Silverman, Founder

Over the years, that list turned into a complete business operating system that streamlines the process of selling and servicing group insurance from the perspective of brokers, general agents, and carriers.

Eventually, we spun off a separate company — Hillcrest Business Systems, founded in February 2009 — for the purpose of taking what we'd built for our own agency and turning it into a product other brokers could use. That product is BenefitsGuide.

Nearly 20 Years of Continuous Development

Every feature, every integration, and every workflow template in BenefitsGuide exists because a real broker asked for it.

2004

Jason reads the Fortune article. Signs multi-year Salesforce contract. Begins customizing the platform for his own brokerage.

2009

Hillcrest Business Systems founded. BenefitsGuide released in October as a product for other brokers. First customers come on board.

2010–2015

Core platform takes shape: CRM, commission tracking, policy management, workflow automation, reporting, and dashboards. Feature request list keeps growing as customer base expands.

2016–2020

Integration era begins. Partnerships with benefits administration platforms and document automation tools. Bi-directional data sync eliminates redundant data entry. Embraced Salesforce Lightning and released a new streamlined data model.

2021–2024

Continued investment in the core product — tools that help you increase your work velocity while maintaining order. Insurance-specific integrations, internal processes, user training content, and growth to over 100 agencies nationwide.

2025–Today

The AI chapter begins. Our robots start downloading carrier commission statements automatically — while you sleep. Employee Navigator bi-directional integration goes live. New Project Management application with milestones and checklist item automation. Tickets inbox for client service. Rules-based commission split assignment engine. New Salesforce mobile app. First AI agents go live — SBC Import, Census Normalization, and Ancillary Quote Extraction. Powered by Salesforce Agentforce. BenefitsGuide becomes the operational backbone where AI agents do the work.

The Next Chapter: Where AI Agents Come to Work

The insurance industry is changing faster than it has in decades. AI agents are already handling tasks that used to take hours — extracting data from SBC documents, normalizing messy census files, pulling quotes from ancillary carrier PDFs.

But here's the thing most people miss: AI agents need a place to work. They need structured workflows, clean data, and an open platform they can actually connect to. That's not a spreadsheet. That's not a closed, proprietary system with restricted APIs.

That's Salesforce. And that's BenefitsGuide.

Why This Matters for Your Agency

Every BenefitsGuide subscriber already has access to Salesforce's AI roadmap — Einstein, Agentforce, Data Cloud — built into the platform. No extra cost. No waiting for your vendor to "figure out AI." It's already here.

  • Our first AI agents extract 94 fields from an SBC document in about a minute — work that used to take your team 20-30 minutes per document
  • Census normalization handles messy XLS, XLSX, and CSV files automatically — no more cleaning data by hand
  • Ancillary quote extraction pulls rates from Dental, Vision, Life, STD, LTD, and more — directly into your system
  • Our robots log into carrier websites while you sleep and download your commission statements automatically
  • These are the first AI agents, with more on the way

Nobody cares about AI agents. What they care about is renewals that don't fall through the cracks, commissions that reconcile automatically, and service requests that get resolved fast. AI is how we deliver that. BenefitsGuide is where it happens.

Who Built This

We're a small team on purpose. When you work with us, you're talking directly to the people who build and support the product. No committees. No boards. No waiting six months for a feature request to be "evaluated."

"Prospects work directly with the product team and decision-makers — not waiting for changes to be approved by a board or VC-backed roadmap. That agility means faster response times, less red tape, and real return on investment."
